Athletic Coaching (minor)
Once completed, the Athletic Coaching minor will give you the knowledge needed to coach both individuals and athletic teams in a variety of ages, levels and recreational programs. Future coaches will be able to mentor, engage and develop athletes both on and off the field.
What You'll Study
You will develop leadership skills and learn about the training of psychological skills to enhance sport performance and physical movement activity before focusing on the principles of coaching, decision making and other contemporary issues.
If you wish to focus on college, high school or youth sports, you will also receive a foundation to instructional techniques and theories that help guide decision and policy making for those coaching these age groups.
Further into the program, you will focus primarily on hands-on instruction with an athletic team that will help you to gain practical experience in coaching and athletic administration by enhancing your skills and integrating your knowledge.
After Graduation
You will gain skills to work with youth sports teams, in the coaching field as a primary or secondary career or to develop a foundation for future coaching opportunities.
Career opportunities include:
- Elementary, middle or high school coaching (in a variety of sports)
- Community youth sports coach
- Director of Athletics or Assistant Director of Athletics at the high school or college level
